#FlightPaths Webinar 1: Can Aerospace Really Close the Loop?

We are excited to announce that the ATLAS Cluster is organising its first webinar, taking place online on 24 November 2026, 10:00–12:00 CET, via Microsoft Teams.

A new series of conversations across the ATLAS Cluster

#FlightPaths is a webinar series organised by the ATLAS Cluster, a collaboration of five Horizon Europe projects (CompSTLar, TOSCA, PLEIADES, pAIramid and HyperMorpH) working to accelerate the transformation of aerospace composites and advance the next generation of sustainable aircraft. Each edition gathers researchers from across the cluster to explore a question that cuts across all projects, because the most productive conversations in aerospace research often happen at the intersection of different approaches, not within a single discipline.

The series grows directly out of Wings of Change, the ATLAS Cluster’s first joint workshop held in Zaragoza in September 2026, and builds on the exchanges that began there. #FlightPaths takes those conversations online and opens them to a wider audience.

The first question: can aerospace really close the loop?

The aerospace sector is under growing pressure to reduce its environmental footprint, not only by making aircraft lighter and more fuel-efficient, but by rethinking how materials are sourced, how components are manufactured, and what happens when they reach the end of their first life. Carbon fibre composites, which are central to modern aircraft design, are strong and lightweight but notoriously difficult to recycle. Most composite waste still ends up in landfill. Changing this requires innovation across the entire value chain, from the earliest stages of material and component design through to manufacturing, quality control, life-cycle assessment and end-of-life recovery.

No single project or technology can solve this alone. That is why this first edition of #FlightPaths unites five complementary research perspectives under one shared question.

What to expect

The webinar follows five consecutive presentations, each addressing a different dimension of the circularity challenge in aerospace, from sustainable design and recyclable materials to digital twins and smarter manufacturing processes. A cross-project panel discussion and audience Q&A session follows, giving participants the opportunity to put their questions directly to the speakers and explore the connections between the five research approaches.

The webinar is designed for anyone with an interest in the future of sustainable aviation, whether you work in aerospace research, materials science, manufacturing, sustainability or policy, or are simply curious about where European aviation research is heading.
